International Day of Persons with Disabilities

International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPWD) will take place on Sunday 3rd December 2023.  The day is about promoting the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities at every level of society and development, and to raise awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in all aspects of political, social, economic, and cultural life.  This year, the theme for the IDPWD is 'Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fuelling an accessible and equitable world.

The Council, through our commitments set out in our Strategic Growth Plan and our Disability Scheme and Action Plan, is committed to working to promote positive attitudes and to encourage participation by disabled people in public life and across our communities by creating accessible and user-friendly environments for everyone to enjoy.

To celebrate IDPWD there is a number of activities planned to be delivered over the coming week by Cultural Venues and Disability lead organisations including Millennium Forum, Lilliput, Tuned In, Destined, Foyle Down Syndrome Trust and RNIB.

DCSDC and FODC supported by PHA will also be delivering workshops listed below that are open to the public to attend, although booking is essential:

  1. Friday 08th December: 11:00am-13:00pm @ Millennium Forum:
  • :Inclusive Arts Event Planning Workshop delivered by Damien Coyle and Johnathan Mitchell from University of Atypical.
  1. Tuesday 05th December: 12:00pm – 13:00pm @ Northwest Learning Disability Centre:
  • Disability Awareness information session delivered by members of Destined discussing their lived experience of life with a disability. 
  1. Wednesday 06th December: 18:00 – 19:00 @ online
  • This session will provide community venues, businesses and sports facilities with information on how to make your venue more accessible for people with disabilities .It will also explore good practice examples, such as hearing loops and changing places facilities.
  1. Thursday 7th December: 12:00-12:45 / 18:00 – 18:45 @ online
  • Learn how you can develop social stories for your venue or business to help people with neurodiverse conditions and dementia.
