WORLD WAR I COMES TO KNOCKAVOE SCHOOL
Last week, pupils from Class 7, Years 8/9 and 9/10 at Knockavoe school were transported back in time to World War I to walk in the footsteps of the men and women from Ireland who answered the call to serve their Country. Pupils had the opportunity to learn about and experience first-hand, many aspects of the war, from the recruitment of the men in towns and villages throughout Ireland, to training at Finner Camp, Donegal and Randalstown, their journey to the Western Front and life in the trenches. The assembly hall was set up to emulate the recruitment centre, Finner Camp and of course the dreaded trench systems. The pupils were able to get an insight into how the men lived, fought and died. They also learned about the role of a group of nurses from Strabane who went to the aid of the French at the outbreak of the war. Pupils also learned about the various types of gas masks used in WWI as well as the role of animals throughout the war years. The workshop which was facilitated by Kenny Porter and his wife Amanda, allowed the pupils to expand on their existing knowledge of World War I and was thoroughly enjoyed by all those taking part.
